Plant Height

Description

The height of a wheat plant typically ranges from 30-150 cm as determined by plant genetics and growing conditions. Differences in plant height are due to variation in internode length. Using height as a selection trait in wheat is important for yield improvment. Shorter cultivars tend to produce higher yields than taller cultivars, although differences in quality may vary.

Narrow-sense heritability for plant height and maturity must be high in in F3:4 wheat lines, because it was found that the short, early maturing lines that are selected for will generally produce short, early maturing F4:5 progeny.
