Flea Beetle (Kansas Canola)

Scouting time

Flea beetles attack the cotyledons at emergence and the first true leaves of seedlings producing pits or shot holes in leaves. Generally, flea beetles are less of a problem with later plantings of winter canola. Occasionally, overwintering flea beetles attack canola in the spring, but foliage is abundant and potential damage needs to be severe for treatment to be economical.

Sampling method

Visually observe beetles feeding on plants. Note that the small beetles can be hard to see as they tend to jump when disturbed.

Thresholds

A specific threshold is not listed, though plants can withstand 50 percent damage to the cotyledons without suffering any loss of yield potential. If populations appear high and feeding becomes excessive, stand reductions can occur.
