Stripe rust typically develops earlier in the season, because it is favored by cooler temperatures (55-75F) compared to other types of rust diseases that appear later in the season. As temperatures exceed 75F, the infestation of stripe rust declines. Stripe rust overwinters on volunteer wheat and grassy weeds through the summer and winter. The fungal spores of stripe rust are lighter in color than the dark orange-red spores of leaf and stem rust. As infected plants mature, leaf tissues become brown and die.
